Custom Dies

We connected with a great die factory out of Texas earlier this week.

The dies we use are basically steel templates that are placed over material (outsoles, insoles, leather, synthetics) and then pressed down, giving us the pattern we need.

Dies are important to have as volume picks up because they help save time. It's one thing to hand cut an outsole for a pair of shoes (an hour of work), it's another to press a die over the outsole for a pair of shoes (a minute of work).

However, having dies made only makes sense if there's a particular style that's selling a lot. Otherwise, the cost of having the die made winds up being more than what the cost would have been to just do the work by hand.

As L&B scales, these are some of the decisions we need to make along the way.
